A long volcanic ridge, with tiny coastal plains tucked beneath steep cliffs.
In history
A long, narrow ridge of volcanoes with cliffs falling straight to the sea, and at their feet the fajãs: little plains of land where villages, vines and even coffee grow.
Its cows give the milk for Queijo São Jorge, a sharp, spicy cheese whose making the early Flemish settlers helped to shape. In 1808 an eruption at Urzelina buried part of the village; only the church tower still stands.
