Sete Cidades’ blue and green lakes, Lagoa do Fogo, Furnas, and green Atlantic pastures.
In history
The largest island, home to about half of all Azoreans. Vila Franca do Campo was its first capital, until an earthquake and landslide in 1522 buried it; Ponta Delgada took its place.
Its volcanoes left crater lakes like Sete Cidades and Lagoa do Fogo, and the hot springs of Furnas, where cozido is still cooked in the ground. On the north coast, Gorreana and Porto Formoso still grow tea, a rare sight in Europe.
