A gentle island of dry meadows and a green caldera above the sea.
In history
The second smallest island, gentle and dry, once called the breadbasket of the Azores for the cereal it sent away, ground in its windmills.
Inside its caldera, the Furna do Enxofre is a vast cave with a lake far below the ground. The whole island is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
