An immense volcanic mountain watches over black lava and stone-walled vineyards.
In history
Pico’s mountain is the highest point in Portugal, at 2,351 metres, with the little cone of Piquinho on its summit.
Its vineyards, walled in black lava stone against the sea wind, are a UNESCO World Heritage landscape. Pico was also the island of the whalers: Lajes do Pico keeps their museum and their boats, and whaleboat races still fill its harbour every summer.
