The nine islands

Nine volcanic islands in the middle of the North Atlantic, in three groups. In the game each has its harbour, its landmarks, its catch and its festas; step ashore and you can walk them.

The eastern group

The oldest islands, closest to Europe.

• Santa MariaThe sun islandThe oldest island, where golden shores meet warm, sheltered water.

The central group

Five islands close enough to see one another across the channels.

• TerceiraThe lilac islandColourful harbours, rolling pasture and a volcanic heart.
• GraciosaThe white islandA gentle island of dry meadows and a green caldera above the sea.
• São JorgeThe island of fajãsA long volcanic ridge, with tiny coastal plains tucked beneath steep cliffs.
• PicoThe mountain islandAn immense volcanic mountain watches over black lava and stone-walled vineyards.
• FaialThe blue islandHydrangea hedges and a harbour that has welcomed sailors from across the world.

The western group

On the American plate, at the far western edge of Europe.

• FloresThe flower islandWaterfalls, crater lakes and a wild green coastline at the edge of Europe.
• CorvoThe little islandThe great Caldeirão, twin crater waters, and steep green cliffs above the Atlantic.
